CSUF/UCI-CFCCC Cancer Health Equity Research Partnership (CHERP)
CHERP is a four-year research and training program that has a multi-pronged mission: to fund pilot research projects involving investigators from each institution while training under-represented minority (URM) undergraduates and graduate students on cancer disparities research.
Chao Lectureship - Current Speaker
The Allen and Lee-Hwa Chao Lectureship in Cancer Research was established in 1999 with a gift from Allen Chao and his wife Lee-Hwa Chao. The Chao family has been generous contributors to UC Irvine and the Cancer Center over the years, with three generations of Chaos giving nearly $30 million to the campus. The lecture series provides a forum to share and discuss topics related to cancer research, prevention and treatment. Each year the lectureship hosts an internationally renowned leader in cancer research, who delivers a technical colloquium in addition to a public lecture. Both lectures are free and open to the public.
Virus-based sensor detects bladder cancer markers in urine
Researchers have made a virus-based biosensor that detects markers of bladder cancer in urine. Their goal is to make a dipstick that can quickly detect bladder cancer as part of routine urinalysis.
UCI and CSU Fullerton partner to advance cancer health disparities research with a focus on diversity and inclusion
With a grant of more than $1.1 million from the National Cancer Institute (NCI), the UCI Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (CFCCC) and California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) have established a collaborative partnership focused on addressing cancer disparities of the highest need in Orange County.
Specialties
At the UCI Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (CFCCC), we offer a wide range of specialized treatment options to our patients. As the only National Cancer Institute designated comprehensive cancer center in Orange County, our patients have access to latest therapies through our most innovative clinical trials, many of them developed by CFCCC members.

CHERP – Pilot Research Projects
The California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) and University of California, Irvine Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center (UCI-CFCCC) are pleased to announce the 2022-23 Cancer Health Equity Research Program (CHERP) Pilot Projects 2022-23 funding round.
Start-up Creator Series (Day 1)
To stimulate new innovations responsive to the needs of cancer patients and treatment providers, we are hosting a start-up generator event designed to leverage Orange County’s entrepreneurial ecosystem to improve the lives of cancer patients. The event will showcase patient and physician experiences in focus-group panels and culminate in a “Pitch Day” with TED-style talks to drive development of market-driven innovations. The events are intended for an audience of faculty, students, venture capitalists, funding agencies, patient advocacy groups, startup co-founders and key opinion leaders including but not limited to cancer patients and their families.

FY22 Pancreatic Cancer Research Program (PCARP)
The DoD Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs: FY22 PCARP is currently accepting applications for two award mechanisms: Idea Development Award and Translational Research Partnership Award. Preproposal due July 8, 2022.
Notice of Special Interest: Understanding the Basic Mechanisms of Immune-related Adverse Events (irAEs) in Cancer Immunotherapy
NOT-CA-22-063. Multiple deadlines and participating Institutes/Centers. The overall goal of this Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) is to promote mechanistic research aimed at better understanding the pathophysiology of immune-related adverse events (irAEs). It is anticipated that the mechanistic research supported through this NOSI will build the foundational knowledge which will ultimately lead to better strategies to predict, prevent and/or ameliorate toxicities that can arise as a consequence of current immunotherapeutic regimens, and improve treatment outcomes. The proposed research can be basic or translational but should be focused on revealing the mechanisms underlying irAEs. Single investigators and/or multidisciplinary teams with relevant expertise in the research area proposed and/or patient characterization and selection are encouraged to apply.
FY22 Kidney Cancer Research Program (KCRP)
The DoD Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs: FY22 KCRP is currently accepting applications for four award mechanisms: Idea Development Award, Translational Research Partnership Award, Concept Award, and Postdoctoral Clinical Fellowship Award. Preproposals or LOIs are due September 29, 2022.
Notice of Special Interest: Basic Mechanisms of Cannabis and Cannabinoid Action in Cancer
NOT-CA-22-085. Multiple deadlines and participating Institutes/Centers. Earliest due date 6/5/2022. The purpose of this Notice of Special Interest (NOSI) is to promote research in understanding the mechanisms by which cannabis and cannabinoids affect cancer biology, cancer interception, cancer treatment and resistance, and management of cancer symptoms.
