As we shared with you a couple of weeks ago, Dr. Frank Meyskens, has been appointed to Vice Dean of UC Irvine School of Medicine and assumed the title of Director Emeritus of the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center. Concurrently, we have initiated a national search for the next director of the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, which is being led by a first-rate search committee.
While this search is underway, it is imperative for us to have continuous leadership over the cancer center's infrastructure and research activities. Today, we are pleased to announce that starting Sept. 1, Dr. Sheldon Greenfield, executive co-director of the Health Policy Research Institute and Donald Bren Professor of Medicine, will undertake these efforts as the cancer center's interim director. Dr. Greenfield has enthusiastically accepted this key position and will work with us to continue strengthening the cancer center's reputation as one of the nation's premier institutions for cancer research and care.
Dr. Greenfield has been with UC Irvine since 2003, when he and his wife Dr. Sherrie Kaplan, were recruited to co-direct the Health Policy Research Institute. The institute is an interdisciplinary research unit dedicated to studying quality of care, the doctor-patient relationship, and measuring the outcomes of care, with an emphasis on chronic disease in minority populations. The institute's findings are disseminated through ongoing training and educational functions, service activities, as well as collaborative research projects involving faculty members and the community.
During his career, Dr. Greenfield has mentored many students, fellows and junior faculty seeking careers in clinical research. In fact, he and Dr. Kaplan also started a master of science program in evidence based medicine and comparative effectiveness research at UC Irvine School of Medicine, with the intent to foster biomedical and clinical research in Orange County and turn basic and clinical research into improved patient care.
Dr. Greenfield is a passionate, accomplished and world-renowned professor. He was elected to the Institute of Medicine in 1996 and as of July 2012, his papers have been cited more than 22,000 times. He is a founding member and president of the Society of General Internal Medicine and is currently senior co-editor of the recently launched international Journal of Comparative Effectiveness Research. Dr. Greenfield also continues to practice primary care as a general internist at Gottschalk Medical Plaza. You may read more about Dr. Greenfield and his collective achievements here.
We are extremely proud to welcome Dr. Greenfield to the Chao Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, which continues to be one of only 41 designated comprehensive cancer centers in the nation by the National Cancer Institute. His passion for research, medical education and patient care are clearly aligned with our mission to Discover. Teach. Heal. He will be a tremendous asset to our interdisciplinary cancer center team and we look forward to working with him to strengthen our translational research programs, which aim to bring hope to cancer patients throughout Orange County and beyond.
